What to see and do in Berlin

Berlin is a dynamic city filled with rich history.  There is so much to see in a city that is filled with stories in every wall and every street.

  • Book a private tour of Berlin.  This is a great way to get an introduction to the city and hear the stories that make Berlin so famous.  We like the 3 hour private tour that allows us to see the most important sights and then we can go back and spend more time in places that intrigue us.
  • Checkpoint Charlie
  • Berlin Wall
  • Berlin Wall museum
  • Holocaust Memorial
  • Brandenburg Gate
  • The Mall of Berlin - be sure to go to the 3rd floor to slide down the giant corkscrew slide all the way down to the first floor.  Lots of toy stores including a Playmobil store
  • Museum Island
  • Hotel Aldon
  • TV Tower Berlin
  • East Side Gallery Berlin
  • Try some Currywurst
  • Tiergarten Park
  • Gendarmenmarkt area
  • Ampelmann - play a game counting the amount of Ampelmann you see.  Be sure to stop at one of the Ampelmann stores sprinkled around Berlin.
  • Explore some of the historical streets like the one above the bunker where Hitler committed suicide.
  • German Spy Museum -the museum showed the history of spies dating back to BC. Tons of interactive activities with code breaking, Morse code, finding hidden “bugs” in a room, dress up like a detective, James Bond screens, and an awesome laser course that the kids went through multiple times. I thought we would only spend an hour at the museum but we ended up spending over 2 hours exploring it!
  • Check for local festivals going on.  When we were in Berlin there was an environmental festival (similar to our Earth Day festival) happening right by Brandenburg Gate.  It was filled with tents of merchants and food stalls.  It was great place to sample some local beers and flavors.
  • Ritter Sport Chocolate Store - 2 floors of yumminess!

Where to eat in Berlin

Restaurant Noelle  - This restaurant was recommended to us by our tour guide.  We loved their pork Schnitzel, sausages, and their potato fries.  The ambience was so cool and we loved the street that it was located on, so much to see! http://www1.restaurant-nolle.de/en

Augustiner Am Gendarmenmarkt - We loved this restaurant.  We loved the old German feel.  This restaurant opened in 1328!  We loved everything we ate: 2 different types of sausages, currywurst, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, and even a german pretzel.  (If you have a picky eater like we have, you can ask for the currywurst without the sauce, our son loved that option) http://www.augustiner-braeu-berlin.de/index.html

Fontana de Trevi Restaurant Berlin -We ate here the night we arrived in Berlin.  We stumbled upon it near our hotel.  It was only 5pm so we were the only patrons.  The staff was so kind and welcoming.  Every dish that we ordered was so heavenly.  We each ordered something different, pasta with meatballs, wood fired pizza, chicken, and a pizza shell.  All were excellent.  http://fontanaditrevi-berlin.de/

Vapiano - We really try to avoid chain restaurants when we travel however our kids were hungry and we passed Vapiano and the kids were mesmerized and hooked on the pictures hanging in the windows.  And truthfully a refreshing salad sounded so good on that hot day.  Our kids had the pizza and pasta offerings while my husband and I had crisp salad with various fresh vegetables.  This was such a great option for families.  We ended up seeing more of them as we traveled throughout Germany. https://www.vapiano-restaurant.de/de/

Ritter Sport Chocolate - For a sweet fun treat head to Ritter Sport.  You can create your own chocolate bar or you can indulge at the chocolate cafe on the second floor.  https://www.ritter-sport.de/de/besuchen/berlin.html
