Northern Iceland - 2 day Sample Itinerary
Day 1 - Drive from Seyoisfjorour to Dettifoss. From the parking lot, follow the trail to Dettifoss (beware there is a lot of spray from the waterfall and rocks can be slippery. There are different viewing areas once you get to Dettifoss. Go to all of them they are all incredible. After Dettifoss take the path back and head on the path to Selfoss. Leaving Selfoss drive to Asbyrgi Canyon. After hiking the path and admiring the beauty and wonderment of Asbyrgi Canyon, drive to Volcano Krafla. Walk amongst this strange part of earth and the lava fields. Then head to Hverir Geothermal area. Be aware that the are has a very pungent sulfur smell, but the beauty is too dazzling to pass up. Walk around to the different geothermal pools and fumaroles.
Day 2 - Start your morning driving to Lake Myvatn. Be sure to purchase bug head nets to protect you from the midges (which are similar to mosquitos). Thousands of these tiny bugs swarm your face and head all around this area. Head to see the Pseudocraters. After you park you can walk along all of the paths that take you along the tops of the Pseudocraters. Drive to Grjotagja Cave it is a little difficult to access inside the cave (some climbing on big rocks) but easy walk above the fissure. After the cave drive to Hverfjall crater. Hverfjall is a bare symmetrical and circular explosion crater thought to be 2800 – 2900 years old. It's one of the largest of its kind in the world. Drive to Dimmuborgir. Dimmuborgir is one of the most surprising lava fields in Iceland. There are a few different hiking trails to choose from. End your evening driving to Godafoss. Godafoss is an elegant wide horseshoe shape waterfall.
