South West and Southern Iceland
2 Day Sample Itinerary
Day 1 - Start your day at Urridafoss, a gorgeous waterfall about an hour outside of Reykjavik. Be sure to look out for fisherman catching the freshest seafood. Pay attention to the absolutely gorgeous Lupine flowers that are everywhere. Drive to the new Lava Centre Museum to learn all about the Volcano activty in Iceland (This was our favorite museum in Iceland, very interactive and modern). Then drive on to Seljalandsfoss. Plan to spend lots of time here. Be sure to walk behind the waterfall. It's very slippery, so wear water clothes and waterproof hiking boots. Follow the path from Seljalandsfoss waterfall to another waterfall hidden in a Canyon: Glufrafoss (also called Gljúfrabúi ). Very short 5 min stroll away from Seljalandsoss. Be sure to walk in all of the nooks and crannies of the canyon. They are all so beautiful. On your drive further south be sure to stop by the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano and the Vistors Center.
Day 2 - Hop in your car for an early drive to Skogafoss. This is a gorgeous waterfall. Skip rocks and walk along the creek that feeds out of Skogafoss. Warm up after Skogafoss and head to the Skogar Museum. It is a museum about Icelandic history but it is also filled with Turf Houses. Back in your car drive to Solheimajokull Glacier. Dress very warm and be careful of the wind. Make sure cell phones and cameras are tightly secured. Hike to the beginning of the glacier. After visiting the Glacier head to Dryhoaely. Hike to the rock for incredible views. Then continue your drive to Reynisfjara Beach (Be careful on beach and watch for sneak waves). Take your time walking around admiring the Reynisdrangar Sea Cliffs, the Reynisfjall Mountain, and the towering, spiky basalt sea stacks. Walk the black sand beach and feel the volcanic sand in your fingers. Drive to your last stop of the day at Laufskalavarda - Lava Field. Be sure to grab a stone and put it on top of one of the piles of stones for good luck.
